Christiansburg’s CraftMaster Manufacturing plant will close at the end of the year, according to a release from the company’s Oregon-based owner JELD-WEN Inc.
The release, sent out last week, said the plant is closing to improve efficiency. It will officially shut down on Jan. 31. The Christiansburg door and window manufacturing company has 109 employees.
“Christiansburg employees are being encouraged to transfer to other JELD-WEN production facilities as the company continues to supply customer orders from larger, more efficient facilities within its network,” the release said.
JELD-WEN will provide moving allowances to employees who transfer . For those who don’t , severance benefits and job-finding assistance will be provided before the plant closes its doors.
The release said JELD-WEN is still investing in its larger facilities and “these moves continue to strengthen JELD-WEN’s position in the marketplace.”
JELD-WEN is a major manufacturer of windows and doors and has 20,000 employees in more than 100 locations in the world.
The company acquired the Chicago-based door maker CraftMaster Manufacturing Inc. in October 2012. Employees at the Christiansburg CraftMaster plant were notified soon after the acquisition that the facility would close, but JELD-WEN reversed that decision a week later, keeping it open until now.
The closest JELD-WEN plants are in North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Lexington, N.C., more than 100 miles away.
