Source: Window & Door General strengthening in the housing market over the past 18 months is translating into increased spending on home improvements, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. Remodeling contractors have been reporting improving market conditions for the past four quarters, and are seeing strength in future market indicators. Spending trends have been on a solid upward slope, with indicators projecting continued strengthening of the market through the end of this year and into the first quarter of 2014.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced that the Springfield, Mass. Housing Authority will pay an $11,000 penalty for failing to inform tenants their apartments may contain lead-based paint, as required by law. In addition, the housing authority agreed to render apartment buildings at four of its properties lead safe at a cost of more than $49,500.

Source: AAMA Expanding aerosol polyurethane foam can greatly enhance the installation quality of prime and replacement fenestration products by sealing the gap between the rough opening and the window frame against air leakage. The installer’s usual approach is to finish installing a window from the outside of a building, then go inside and run a bead of the foam in the gap between the rough opening’s studs and the window frame. The foam then expands to assume the shape of the gap, and cures and hardens to provide an effective air barrier.

AAMA Releases Specification for Self Adhering Flashing for Exterior Wall Fenestration Installation7/29/2013
The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) has released an updated standard that establishes minimum performance requirements for self adhering flashing surrounding exterior wall fenestration products. AAMA 711-13, Voluntary Specification for Self Adhering Flashing Used for Installation of Exterior Wall Fenestration Products also provides a method to determine the minimum width of the flashing products and to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on the installation of self adhering flashing products applied under typical field conditions.
